.bio .images .media Soul Merchants The Soul Merchants only existed for two years in the mid 80s but in that short time period recorded and released three albums, one double album, one EP, and appeared on a number of compilations. Another example of their productivity is that they performed one cover at each live performance but never the same cover-with the one exception of Iron Butterfly's 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'. The 18 minute song was played note for note and the band played it at 2 shows due to fan demand.
Soul Merchants. The band is best described as they described it in the 80s: psychedelic death rock. On the surface and at the heart of it, the Soul Merchants could have been called Denver's version of the Sisters Of Mercy. But even in the 80s these guys were too old to be the new hip goth act and their 60s psych and 70s glam influences shine brightly over the darkness. Catchy pop hooks can be found in most songs too. Bob Ferbrache was neither an original or final member of the band but he was present in the line up for most of the band's short life. He also recorded everything by the band and is currently going through the master tapes to compile a 2 disc set of the band's best songs from the 4 track recordings. Most of the albums were released on cassette only at the time. As you may suspect, Mr Ferbrache is doing an excellent job remastering everything from the original tapes and the 2 disc set should be released this spring. Soul Merchants Press Review at Ink19 Review at Exclaim Aversion.com - Soul Merchants review Originally a three-piece out of Denver, and only later adding a fourth member, the gloom-ridden shadow-pop of the Soul Merchants is hardly surprising granted their origins. The Mile High City turns out bands with a dark undertone at a notable and impressively high volume. This group, however, was a special breed of Denver-goth. Their sound was not only dark-rock Joy Division worship but also 60s dark-pop psych-tinged. Re-mastered and reworked from four-track cassette only releases by producer and fourth member Robert Ferbrache, the two discs come marked 'light' the other 'dark' and celebrate the recordings from 1985-1987m the two short years the band was active. At the risk of sounding like a fruit, these tracks are swirling, beautiful, dark, creepy, overlooked relics from a band that would have made regular Goth-night goer's panties wer. Soul Merchants was the real deal. -Maximumrocknroll Review at Leonard's Lair Soul Merchants Media Joanna *mp3! Attics *mp3! When I Smile *mp3! |
