Bum Kon's 'Drunken Sex Sucks' will be available on April 14th. The band recorded 25 songs with Bob Ferbrache in 1983 and 5 of them were released on Local Anesthetic as the 'Drunken Sex Sucks' EP, a now sought after 7" by punk rock record collectors across the globe. Mr Ferbrache remixed and remastered all 25 tracks from the original tapes so it sounds super rockin'. Personally, I think some of the songs that were not released on the EP are better than the ones that do appear on the single, as well as the Local Anesthetic compilation. I should also note the version of the songs on the compilation come straight from the single & sound inferior to the Bum Kon album, which is being released on both CD & LP and co-released with MAXIMUMROCKNROLL. Singer Bob currently sings in San Francisco based Hank IV (no relation to the previous 3 Hanks) and also graces the cover of the Local Anesthetic compilation.

Jimmy Carter Syndrome, Munly's fourth album, will be reissued in May with new and improved artwork.

Bum Kon's 'Drunken Sex Sucks' album will be released this spring both on CD and LP. It will be co-released with Smooch Records & Maximumrocknroll. In the meantime, the single 'Drunken Sex Sucks' is now available on the Local Anesthetic compilation. The album version of the songs have been remixed and remastered from the original tapes, whereas the compilation includes the tinny sounding 7" version.

1/18/08
Local Anesthetic will be available for sale 2/4/08 on CD. The LP format will be issued later in the year. It includes all 7" singles released by the Local Anesthetic label in the early 80s as well as 3 'bonus' singles predating the label. Colorado music history on a disc. Please visit the releases page for more info on the best punk compilation ever released!

Andrew Douglas Rothbard's debut album 'Abandoned Meander' was named #4 Underground Album of the Year by Mojo Magazine. Happy they noticed...

The Kalamath Brothers CD is now available via Smooch Records. It was self-released by the band in 2001 and has been hard to track down outside of Denver ever since. Kalamath Brothers was the project of Frank Hauser JR (formerly of Slim Cessna's Auto Club & Denver Gentlemen) and Kevin Soll (formerly of 16 Horsepower).

Maraca Five-O's album 'Headin' South at 110 Per' is now available in the digital format from most places that sell such things (aka itunes). The CD is currently out of print though there are a few copies left in my closet so if you prefer an original, send an email. There is also talk of reissuing the album on vinyl.

The Denver Broncos (UK) video for 'Broncos Fight Song' can now be viewed on youtube and myspace.com/denverbroncosusa. The video was made by original Auto Club drummer Jon Killough from footage of the upcoming 'Denver Sound' film.

9/16/2007
Crossbreeding Begins At Home was a limited edition CDr compilation of rare songs from Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots, and Tarantella. It was limited to 100 copies and each brown bag that packaged the disc was autographed by members of the bands. The CD was only sold at the New Years Eve show in 2003. If you were not at the show and have not already burned it from someone else, some of the songs from Slim Cessna's Auto Club are now available for digital download at itunes and other digital stores.

The 'Local Anesthetic' compilation will be released this fall, but not September 1st as initially planned. The Denver Punk Reunion is still being held September 1st at the CAPSULE ART & EVENT CENTER (560 Sante Fe) but for a variety of reasons will no longer have live music. Hopefully next years event, which will mark the 30th anniversary of Wax Trax for the current owners, will include live music by the bands we hoped could perform this year. This years event is now part of Denverfest (myspace.com/denverfest) and like the first Denver Punk Reunion, will have a slideshow and hopefully lots of old flyers posted on the walls as well. New this year will be video footage of Denver bands circa 77-87 shown. We have dug up some good footage so it should be entertaining for anyone who remembers the bands, as well as people curious to see footage of Denver punk bands from the early days. The 'Local Anesthetic' compilation will also be debuted that night as well as some other old CO punk music.

The Soul Merchants double disc set will be released in October and the 'Local Anesthetic' compilation and Bum Kon 'Drunken Sex Sucks' sessions shortly after.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club is planning an East Coast tour for OCT and will be performing at Fanatic's CMJ showcase on OCT 20th at the Annex.

Mister Smooch & original Auto Club drummer, Jon Killough, have begun work on a documentary film that at this point will be called THE DENVER SOUND. We hope it will act as some sort of history of the the group of musicians that are associated with that title, namely the individuals from 16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots, Denver Gentlemen, Devotchka, Woven Hand, Lilium, Tarantella, Kalamath Brothers, Denver Broncos, and more. We were hesitant to announce this but after 8 days of filming in Denver, are excited to finish the film. Even the mayor had nice things to say about the Denver Sound. We ask that if you have live footage of these bands, to please get in touch and pass it on to us for this project. Thanks.

Andrew Douglas Rothbard has remixed and self-released his debut album on vinyl. Some folks that have heard the new mix like these versions of the songs even more than the CD. It is rather limited, looks great on 12" format (the details of the moldy wood are more clear), and currently the only place to be found is at www.midheaven.com

Here is what the critics say of the album...

Probably important and most likely essential. - Dream Magazine

Post modern Califonia Dreamin...you'll want some of Rothbard's kool-aid - Alternative Press

Gorgeous wash of outsider pysch and shimmering sun-dabbled pop- Mojo

After penning some of the most evil Sabbath-meets-Little Richard rock and roll on this side of the globe with his old bands the Slaves and Pleasure Forever, Andrew Douglas Rothbard now picks up an acoustic guitar, lets his eyes roll into the back of his head and sings his sonnets on the street corners of the occult world. -the Cauldron

Hypnotic and compelling. -Download.com

Mind fucking, then one could call it Psycho Folk, and imagine something corresponding under it. -Nonpop (germany)

One of those captivating, outta-nowhere masterworks - SF Weekly (cover story)

Completely detached from trends and popularity contests, and his openness to reinvention results in music which flows forth so naturally it seems effortless. - Aquarius

With eclectic sounds layered over acoustic picking patterns, Rothbard's music engrosses, entrances, and surprises. - Skyscraper.

Artwork for Soul Merchants release is almost complete which means it will be released soon! The same is true for Bum Kon and hopefully also Annik.

Mark your calendars because Saturday, September 1 ought to be the release date for the Local Anesthetic compilation. Some of the bands/musicians on the compilation will perform old songs at the Bluebird Theater. Other details are being sorted out for the event, which will also mark Wax Trax's 30th year anniversary, but expect to see some old film footage of Denver punk bands. Wax Trax will likely have a merch table full of nothing but 7" singles by bands from Colorado.

And speaking of film and concerts, if you come to the Slim Cessna's Auto Club shows at Bender's on April 27 and 28, expect to be caught on tape. A documentary is now in the works.

2/28/2007
Mistersmooch will act as guest DJ on Radio 1190's Local Shakedown program next Friday, March 9th from 4-6pm MST. If you live outside CO and are interested, you can listen to it at Radio1190.org. The show will be 2 hours of mostly unreleased & forgotten music from Colorado's past and perhaps even a few new recordings that have yet to be released.

2/19/2007
President's Day is as good as any to announce two new releases on Smooch: Introducing by the Denver Gentlemen and Galvanized Yankee by Munly.

Both releases are actually not so new but reissues. Introducing is the debut album from the Denver Gentlemen and was recorded in 1995. Two songs on this album were also recorded by 16 Horsepower on the album Low Estate. The Denver Gentlemen are currently working on their final album.

Galvanized Yankee is the third album from Munly and originally released in 1999. It was remastered at Absinthe Studio and even Bob says it came out the best of the remastered Munly albums. It also features Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame on guest vocal rants. Munly just finished a west coast tour and if I'm not mistaken, you will be able to watch his performance in LA on livevideo.com in a few weeks. But I might be mistaken. In the meantime, you can watch some of Munly's show in Seattle on youtube.

The other good news is both albums are being sold at a much lower cost than most other Smooch releases.

Four other reissues are currently in the works. The artwork for the double disc set from the Soul Merchants is being worked on and will be released in the next few months. The same is the case for Annik, finally.

In the same boat is a not so much lost but forgotten recording session from early 80s hardcore band Bum Kon. Bum Kon recorded a single for the Local Anesthetic label which now fetches well over $150 on ebay. The band recorded some 20 other songs at the same session with Bob Ferbrache that have never seen the light of day, especially while in a box in Bob's mom's basement. Personally, I like some of these songs more than the songs on the single. It reminds me of early Black Flag.

And the reissue I'm most excited about will likely be reissued in the summer or fall. It will be called Local Anesthetic and contain almost every 7" single released by an underground band from Colorado. There are some true gems on this one.

1/13/2007
Introducing the Denver Gentlemen will be reissued on March 6th. It's the debut album from the Denver Gentlemen and was recorded in 1995 at Denver's Bug Theater. It was originally released by Canadian label Absalom and 2 songs from the album were recorded by Sixteen Horsepower on their album Low Estate. The second album from the Denver Gentlemen is currently available and the band hopes to complete their third and final album this year.

The Soul Merchants recordings have been mastered and once artwork is finalized, a release date will be set for the 2 CD set-almost 80 minutes of music per disc.

Munly's third album Galvanized Yankee is available now. Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots will tour the west coast this FEB:

I'm pleased to announce Andrew Douglas Rothbard is the cover story in this weeks edition of the SF Weekly. It was an unexpected surprise to me. I'm also happy to finally announce Feb 13 as the CD release date for Munly's third album, Galvanized Yankee. Like Blurry and Munly De Dar He, Galvanized Yankee has been remastered by Bob Ferbrache and sounds great. The reissue of Introducing The Denver Gentlemen should follow shortly after. Hopefully the Local Anesthetic compilation will be completed by Memorial Day, which has tentatively been set as the CD release show/CO punk reunion show in Denver. Lots of other reissues are in the works. Bob Ferbrache is currently remastering 4-track recordings from one of his former bands, the Soul Merchants, and it will likely turn into a 2 disc set. The Annik CD will also hopefully come out sometime in the spring. I'm happy to announce another reissue in the works. It's not so much a 'lost' recording but more of a forgotten recording from Bum Kon. Bum Kon was an early 80s hardcore band from Denver and 20 songs recorded at the same session from their Drunken Sex Sux single have been found and remastered. It's good stuff.

10/04/2006
Slim Cessna's Auto Club have decided to reissue their double live album 'Jesus Let Me Down' to the general public! The only difference between this edition and the previous edition is that this one has a barcode. It was supposed to hit the stores Dec. 5 but a last minute decision made today changed the date to Oct. 17.

Hopefully the remastered edition of Munly's 'Galvanized Yankee' will make it out in Dec. and shortly following that will be a reissue of the Denver Gentlemen's 'Introducing' CD.

Andrew Rothbard's solo debut is still set for release on halloween. Mp3s were just added to the site and in came the first review-from DOT in Sweden...

'ONCE IN A WHILE YOU STUMBLE UPON MUSIC THAT BLOWS YOUR HEAD OFF. These occasions are as rare as they are wonderful. This, dear people, is such a moment. We urge everyone to investigate this genius starborn songwriter and recommened each and everyone to embrace him fully. This is without hesitation one of the absolute highlights of this year so far....'

Lots of Smooch news to report...the debut solo album from Andrew Douglas Rothbard is scheduled for release on Halloween. He has put three years into perfecting this record & it's well worth the wait. It's good folk music at the root but with layers of very trippy psychedelic sounds played backwards over it all. I've been a fan of his song writing for years when Mr Rothbard fronted Pleasure Forever & am very excited to release his first solo album. In November Jesus Let Me Down by Slim Cessna's Auto Club will be released as a proper album to stores, rather than being left out of print as a fan-club type release. The band & I all agreed it was too good to be left out of print. Galvanized Yankee by Munly will hopefully be available in Nov. or December. Like Blurry & Munly De Dar He, Munly's third album has been remastered by Bob Ferbrache.

I am expecting and hoping next year will be the most busy year for Smooch to date.

In January Introducing The Denver Gentlemen will (hopefully) be reissued. The Annik CD will finally be released in early 2007. Hopefully Ten Songs With No Music by Munly will be repressed early in the year as well. Bob Ferbrache is currently remastering Soul Merchants recordings from the original tapes, which will turn into a CD soon. Another project I am very excited to be part of is a CD compilation called Local Anesthetic. Local Anesthetic was the name of the label that current owner of Wax Trax (the record store in Denver, not the label in Chicago), Duane Davis, ran in the early 80s. Hopefully the compilation will contain all of the singles released by Local Anesthetic as well as recordings from other old Denver/Boulder punk bands circa 77-83. So far most of the bands have excitedly given their seal of approval. Duane Davis is writing the liner notes & I'm sure the CD will be packaged with all sorts of fun photos. The CD is also being released in honor of the 30 year anniversary of Wax Trax, which in my opinion is one of the best record stores in the country & one of very few independent record stores that has lasted this long. We are also hoping to schedule a concert with some of the bands reforming to play the show. Last but not least, Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots are going on another mini-tour. Here are the times & places...

09/09 - Fairplay, CO @ South Park Music Fest
09/14 - Kansas City, MO @ The Record Bar
09/15 - Minneapolis, MN @ Triple Rock Social Club
09/16 - Chicago, IL @ Soth Union Arts
10/28 - Denver, CO @ Oriental Theater

'Blurry' and 'Munly De Dar He' are available now. Both are limited reissues that have been remastered by Bob Ferbrache at Studio Absinthe. If you have pre-ordered the CDs, they will be shipped out this week. 'Galvanized Yankee' and the debut from Andrew Douglas Rothbard will likely both be released in October. Early next year I hope to reissue some other great Denver bands of the past, including the Soul Merchants, Annik, and some of the early 80s punk singles originally released by Local Anesthetic. Smooch has also jumped on band wagon and created a myspace account. Hopefully there will be some interesting content on it soon, but feel free to look at it now and be my 'friend' There is also now a sappy history of Smooch on the 'about' page of this site.

5/21/2006
Smooch will be reissuing Munly's first four albums this year. 'Blurry' and 'Munly De Dar He' will be released on July 10th. Both albums are remastered by Bob Ferbrache and Blurry contains new artwork. Both albums have been out of print for years and due to licensing restrictions, will be limited to 1000 copies each. In the fall, 'galvanized yankee' and 'jimmy carter syndrome' will be reissued. I still have a few copies of 'jimmy carter syndrome' from the original pressing, but they are almost gone and all of these reissues will now be distributed exclusively through Revolver USA. Andrew Douglas Rothbard, once known as Coast Ghost, is putting the final touches to his debut album, which will be released this fall. Buttons are being made with artwork from Munly's first two albums. Smooch buttons are also being made in various colors. The buttons will be included with any item purchased through the Smooch site.
